When the Khan enlists soldiers from each family to fight the invading Tartars, Fa Mulan's family is worried: they have no young sons to offer. Yet, if someone does not join the army, the family will be dishonored. Mulan tells her parents that she will disguise herself as a man and join the troops. Reluctantly, they agree. This retelling of the well-known Chinese legend (c. 5th or 6th century) is an inspiring tale about a hero who is courageous, selfless, and, above all, extremely wise.
Robert D. San Souci and Jean and Mou-Sien Tseng have written and illustrated many classic children's books, and have earned awards including the Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Honors, and ALA notable book distinctions.
